Roll 4d4: four sided dice for Magic Missile-style darts on a tavern table with a spellbook

Roll 4d4: Four d4 Damage Roller

This free 4d4 roller is for players who need four four sided dice in one tap. That pool is the dice half of four Magic Missile-style darts, and it also covers other small 4d4 damage notes. Toggle +1 per die when each die should carry a +1, then roll to see every face and the total. The main DnD dice roller still handles any other notation.

Tap to roll 4d4. Turn on +1 per die when you want four Magic Missile-style darts.

Average for 4d4: 10 (four d4s average 10)

How to use the 4d4 roller

Start at 4d4. Press the big die or Roll 4d4 to see the total and each face. Four fair d4s average 10 and range from 4 to 16.

Add +1 per die when you need it. Four Magic Missile darts are 1d4+1 each, which is 4d4+4 if you add those bonuses together. The checkbox turns that +4 on without making this page a full spell slot calculator.

A single four sided die, or a different count such as 2d4+2 for a Potion of Healing, belongs on the d4 roller or the main roller.

4d4 and Magic Missile-style darts

Magic Missile deals 1d4+1 force damage per dart. A 1st-level casting creates three darts. Each slot level above 1st adds one dart, so a 2nd-level casting is four darts. This preset rolls the four dice. It does not pick targets, and it does not track higher slot counts such as five or six darts.

If you need a different number of d4s, raise the count on the d4 page or type the notation on the main roller, such as 3d4+3 or 6d4+6. This page stays a 4d4 preset on purpose, not a spell database.

Odds on 4d4

Four fair d4s range from 4 to 16 and cluster near 10. Each extra +1 shifts that whole curve up by 1, so 4d4+4 clusters near 14 and ranges from 8 to 20. Open the dice probability calculator, set 4 dice, d4 and a target if you want the chance to beat a number.

If you would rather type the roll yourself, enter 4d4 or 4d4+4 on the main roller.

Roll 4d4 FAQ

Is this 4d4 roller free?

Yes. It is free, with no ads and no sign up. Open the page on any device and roll.

Why would I roll 4d4?

Four d4s show up whenever a small damage pool uses that many four sided dice. Four Magic Missile darts each roll 1d4+1, so the dice portion is 4d4 and the dart bonuses add another +4 if you turn that option on.

What is the average of 4d4?

The average of one d4 is 2.5, so four d4s average 10. The possible totals run from 4 to 16. With +1 per die, the average is 14 and the range is 8 to 20.

Is 4d4 the same as Magic Missile?

Not by itself. Magic Missile deals 1d4+1 force damage per dart. A 1st-level casting is three darts, and each slot level above 1st adds one dart. Four darts are the 2nd-level count, which is 4d4+4 if you include each dart's +1. This page is a 4d4 preset, not a full spell write-up.

Can I type 4d4 somewhere else?

Yes. The main dice roller accepts 4d4 and 4d4+4. This page is the dedicated preset for that common four-d4 pool. Single four sided dice also have their own d4 roller.
