Roll a D12: Twelve Sided Dice Roller
This free d12 roller is for DnD players, Dungeons & Dragons fans and game masters who need a fair twelve sided die for greataxe damage, a lance hit or a barbarian hit die. Tap the die to roll, set how many d12s you want and add your modifier. The page covers what a d12 does in 5e, why it sees less table time than a d6 or d8 and the odds behind each face.
Tap the die to roll 1d12. Space and Enter work too.
Average for 1d12: 6.5 (before you roll)
How to use the d12 roller
Tap to roll. Press the big die to roll. Space and Enter work too once the page has focus, unless you are typing in a box.
Set the count and modifier. One d12 is the default, which matches a greataxe or lance swing and a single barbarian hit die. Raise the count when a critical hit or a class feature adds extra weapon dice, and type your Strength modifier (plus any magic bonus) so the total is ready to announce.
Read every face. Several d12s list each face under the total. The average for your current notation is shown before you roll, so 1d12+4 previews as 10.5.
For typed notation such as 1d12+4, or to mix dice, use the main DnD dice roller. For exact odds, open the dice probability calculator.
What a d12 is used for in 5e
The d12 is a regular dodecahedron: twelve pentagonal faces. It is the largest single damage die in the standard set, and it belongs to a short list of weapons and class features.
A greataxe deals 1d12 slashing damage. A lance deals 1d12 piercing damage. Both wait on a successful attack roll, so the usual sequence is a d20 to hit and then this die for damage.
The barbarian uses a d12 as a hit die, the largest hit die among the classes in the System Reference Document. That gives barbarians a high hit point roll at each level and a large spend during a short rest. The hit points roller adds Constitution for you when you level up. Some barbarian features also add extra weapon dice when you score a critical hit; with a greataxe those extra dice are more d12s. New to the bag? See what dice you need for DnD.
Why the d12 sees less use
Most 5e weapons use a d6, a d8 or two d6s. Only a few use a d12, so in many bags this die spends more time as a spare than as the star. That does not make it optional. If anyone at the table plays a barbarian or swings a greataxe, the d12 matters every round they hit, and it matters again when they spend hit dice.
Other tabletop games and homebrew tables lean on it more. If your group uses a d12 for something the rules did not list here, set the count and modifier and roll it the same way.
Average d12 roll
The average d12 roll on this d12 roller is 6.5. The average of one d12 is 6.5. Each face from 1 to 12 has the same 1 in 12 chance, about 8.33%. With a +4 modifier the average total is 10.5. Two d12s average 13.
Compared with 2d6 (average 7, most common total 7), a single d12 has a slightly lower average (6.5) and a flatter spread. It can roll a 1 or a 12, while 2d6 cannot roll a 1 and only rarely rolls a 12. That is the usual trade when someone asks whether a greataxe (1d12) or a greatsword (2d6) hits harder on average: the greatsword is a bit steadier and a bit higher on average, while the greataxe can spike higher on one face and pairs better with features that add extra weapon dice.
More than a d12
Roll the attack on the d20 roller, then come back here for damage. Other single-die pages cover the d4, d6, d8, d10 and d100. New characters can use the stat roller. How rolls stay fair is on the about page and in the FAQ.
d12 roller FAQ
Is this d12 roller free?
Yes. It is free, with no ads and no sign up. Open the page on any device and roll.
What is the average d12 roll?
The average of one d12 is 6.5, which is (1 + 12) divided by 2. Each face has a 1 in 12 chance, about 8.33%.
What is a d12 used for in 5e?
The twelve sided die is the greataxe damage die and the barbarian hit die. A lance also deals 1d12 piercing damage. Some barbarian features add extra weapon dice on a critical hit, and those extra dice are d12s when the weapon is a greataxe.
Why does a dice set include a d12 if it sees less use?
A standard seven-die set still includes it because greataxes and barbarian hit points depend on it, and because many homebrew tables and other tabletop games use a d12. It is the least rolled die in a lot of 5e groups, not a useless one.
Can I roll more than one d12?
Yes. Set the dice count, then tap to roll. You can roll up to 20 d12s here. For mixed dice or typed notation such as 1d12+4, use the main dice roller.
Is the d12 roll truly random?
Each dice roll draws random numbers from your browser's cryptographic generator. Values that would favor a face are thrown out and drawn again, so all twelve faces have the same chance.
See the Nat20 Roller FAQ for more on notation, advantage and how rolls stay random.
