Roll 2d6 for greatsword or maul damage as adventurers face a red dragon

Roll 2d6: Two d6 Damage Roller

This free 2d6 roller is for D&D 5e players who need two six sided dice in one tap, the damage pool on a greatsword or a maul. See both faces and the total, add a modifier, and optionally reroll a 1 or a 2 once for Great Weapon Fighting. The main DnD dice roller still handles any other notation.

Tap to roll 2d6. Optional: reroll a 1 or 2 once for Great Weapon Fighting.

Average for 2d6: 7 (plain 2d6 averages 7; with the fighting style it averages about 8.3 before a modifier)

How to use the 2d6 roller

Tap to roll 2d6. Press the big die or Roll 2d6 to see both faces and the total. Plain 2d6 averages 7 and ranges from 2 to 12.

Add a modifier when the sheet has one. A typical Strength bonus sits in the modifier box so the total matches what you write next to the weapon.

Turn on Great Weapon Fighting if you have it. A 1 or a 2 on either die is rerolled once, and the new face is kept even if it is another 1 or 2. That is the same idea as typing 2d6r2 on the main roller.

The attack roll that comes before this damage belongs on the attack roller or the d20 roller. A single six sided die, or a larger pool such as Fireball, belongs on the d6 roller or roll 8d6.

Why 7 is the most common 2d6 total

There are 36 equally likely ways two d6s can land. Six of those ways add to 7, while only one adds to 2 and only one adds to 12. That is why greatsword and maul damage clusters near the middle instead of jumping to 2 or 12 very often.

Great Weapon Fighting changes the edges. Faces of 1 and 2 get a second chance, so the curve shifts up a little. The average moves from 7 to about 8.3 before you add a modifier. It does not turn a 2d6 weapon into something as steady as 3d6; it only trims some of the lowest faces.

2d6 on a hit

A hit still starts with a d20 against Armor Class. After you hit, come back here for the two d6s. A critical hit doubles the damage dice, so a crit with 2d6 becomes 4d6, then you add the modifier once. For a crit you can roll twice on this page, or type 4d6 plus your bonus on the main roller.

This preset does not double the dice automatically, because not every 2d6 roll is a weapon crit. Extra rogue dice still belong on the Sneak Attack roller.

If you want the chance that 2d6 meets a target total, open the dice probability calculator and set 2 dice and d6.

Roll 2d6 FAQ

Is this 2d6 roller free?

Yes. It is free, with no ads and no sign up. Open the page on any device and roll.

What weapons use 2d6 in 5e?

A greatsword and a maul both deal 2d6 slashing or bludgeoning damage. Other notes and monster attacks use two d6s as well. Add your Strength modifier after the dice, using the modifier box if you want that total on this page.

What is the average of 2d6?

The average of one d6 is 3.5, so two d6s average 7. The possible totals run from 2 to 12, and 7 is the most common result at 6 in 36.

What does Great Weapon Fighting do here?

If you have that fighting style, you can reroll a 1 or a 2 on a weapon damage die, and you must use the new roll. This page rerolls each 1 or 2 once. The average of 2d6 then rises from 7 to about 8.3, before any modifier.

Can I type 2d6 somewhere else?

Yes. The main dice roller accepts 2d6, 2d6+3 and 2d6r2. This page is the dedicated preset for that common two-d6 pool. Single six sided dice also have their own d6 roller.

See the Nat20 Roller FAQ for more on notation, advantage and how rolls stay random.
