Roll 3d8: Three d8 Damage Roller
This free 3d8 roller is for D&D 5e spellcasters who need three eight sided dice in one tap. That pool shows up on effects such as Spirit Guardians and a 1st-level Chromatic Orb. Roll to see every face and the total, plus half damage rounded down when a target succeeds on its save. The main DnD dice roller still handles any other notation.
Tap to roll 3d8. After you roll, half damage (rounded down) is shown for a successful save.
Average for 3d8: 13.5 (three d8s average 13.5 before a modifier)
How to use the 3d8 roller
Tap to roll 3d8. Press the big die or Roll 3d8 to see the three faces and the total. Three fair d8s average 13.5 and range from 3 to 24.
Add a modifier only if the note has one. Many of these pools are dice only. Use the box when a feature adds a bonus after the dice.
Read half damage when you need it. After a roll, the tool shows half the total, rounded down, for a successful saving throw. Roll that save on the saving throw roller, the d20 roller or the advantage roller.
A single eight sided die belongs on the d8 roller. Larger or smaller counts can be typed on the main roller.
When 3d8 shows up
Spirit Guardians deals 3d8 radiant or necrotic damage, with a Wisdom saving throw for half, at the lower-level version described in the SRD. Chromatic Orb deals 3d8 damage of a chosen type at 1st level. Other spells and monster features use the same three-d8 band.
This page is a damage preset, not a full spell write-up. It does not pick damage types, upcast tables or area shapes. If a higher-level casting adds more d8s, type that larger pool on the main roller or raise the count on the d8 page.
Odds on 3d8
Three fair d8s range from 3 to 24 and cluster near 13 or 14. Because three dice are added together, totals near the average show up more often than a 3 or a 24. For the chance to beat a target total, open the dice probability calculator, set 3 dice and d8.
If you would rather type the roll yourself, enter 3d8 on the main roller.
Roll 3d8 FAQ
Is this 3d8 roller free?
Yes. It is free, with no ads and no sign up. Open the page on any device and roll.
Why would I roll 3d8?
Three d8s are a common damage band. Spirit Guardians deals 3d8 radiant or necrotic damage (a Wisdom save for half) at the lower spell levels described in the SRD, and Chromatic Orb deals 3d8 damage of a chosen type at 1st level. Other notes use the same pool.
What is the average of 3d8?
The average of one d8 is 4.5, so three d8s average 13.5. The possible totals run from 3 to 24.
What if the target succeeds on the save?
Many of these effects deal half damage, rounded down, on a successful saving throw. After you roll, this page shows that halved total as a convenience. The save itself is a d20 roll on the saving throw page or the d20 roller.
Can I type 3d8 somewhere else?
Yes. The main dice roller accepts 3d8 and any other notation. This page is the dedicated preset for that common three-d8 pool. Single eight sided dice also have their own d8 roller.
See the Nat20 Roller FAQ for more on notation, advantage and how rolls stay random.
