Hit Points Roller 5e
This free hit points roller is for D&D 5e players who are leveling up or building a new character. Pick a class hit die from d6 to d12, add your Constitution modifier, and either roll or take the average. First level uses the maximum of the die. Later levels add at least 1 hit point.
A d10 averages 6 if you take the fixed value. Constitution +2 is added after the die, and later levels add at least 1 hit point.
Choose a class or hit die, then roll or take the average.
How to use the hit points roller
Pick a class or a hit die. Choosing a class sets the matching die. You can also choose the die directly for a custom or multiclass case. Type your Constitution modifier, which can be negative.
Roll one level or build from level 1. "This level-up" applies a single gain: the maximum at 1st level, or a roll or average after that. "From level 1" walks from 1st level through the level you choose and shows each addition plus the running maximum.
Roll the die or take the average. The average values used here are the usual fixed numbers: 4 on a d6, 5 on a d8, 6 on a d10 and 7 on a d12. That is half the die, rounded up.
To roll a hit die by itself during a short rest, you can also use the matching die page: d6, d8, d10 or d12. Mixed notation belongs on the main DnD dice roller.
Hit dice by class
| Class | Hit die | Average later levels |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | d12 | 7 |
| Fighter, paladin, ranger | d10 | 6 |
| Bard, cleric, druid, monk, rogue, warlock | d8 | 5 |
| Sorcerer, wizard | d6 | 4 |
The hit points roller uses these class dice and the usual fixed averages for later levels. At 1st level the hit point maximum is the top face of that die plus Constitution. A wizard with Constitution +3 starts at 9. A barbarian with Constitution +3 starts at 15.
Leveling up and the minimum of 1
When you gain a level after 1st, you gain another Hit Die. You roll it (or take the average) and add your Constitution modifier. If that total would be 0 or less, you still gain 1 hit point.
This roller does not add extra hit points from class features, feats, or magic items. Add those on the character sheet after you use the tool.
Short rests
On a short rest you can spend Hit Dice to recover hit points. You roll a die of your class size for each one you spend and add Constitution to each roll. That is the same die this page uses for a level-up, but it does not change your hit point maximum. If you just need one die plus a modifier, the single-die pages are enough.
If someone later drops to 0 hit points, keep death saving throws on the death saves tracker.
Hit points roller FAQ
Is this hit points roller free?
Yes. It is free, with no ads and no sign up. Open the page on any device and roll.
How many hit points do I get at 1st level?
At 1st level you take the maximum of your class hit die plus your Constitution modifier. A fighter with Constitution +2 starts at 12 hit points (10 plus 2).
What do I roll when I level up?
From 2nd level on, you roll one hit die and add your Constitution modifier. The total added is at least 1. You may take the average of the die instead of rolling: 4 on a d6, 5 on a d8, 6 on a d10, or 7 on a d12.
Which classes use which hit die?
Barbarians use a d12. Fighters, paladins and rangers use a d10. Bards, clerics, druids, monks, rogues and warlocks use a d8. Sorcerers and wizards use a d6.
Does this include extra hit points from class features?
No. It adds the hit die and Constitution only. Features that grant extra hit points, feats and magic items are not part of this tool.
See the Nat20 Roller FAQ for more on notation, advantage and how rolls stay random.
