Dice Roller FAQ

Answers to common questions about the Nat20 Roller tools, how the dice work and what happens to your data.

Using the dice roller

Is Nat20 Roller free?

Yes. Every tool on the site is free to use, with no sign up and no account.

Which dice can I roll?

The tap buttons cover d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100. Typed notation accepts any die from 2 to 1000 sides, and d% rolls a d100.

How many dice can I roll at once?

Up to 100 dice in a single roll. The tap buttons hold up to 20 of each die, and typed notation lifts that to the full 100.

What dice notation does the roller understand?

Write dice as NdS, such as 3d6, and join terms with + or -, such as 1d20+5 or 2d6+1d4-2. Add kh or kl to keep the highest or lowest dice, dh or dl to drop them, r followed by a number to reroll dice at or below that number once, and ! to make a die explode on its highest face.

How do I roll with advantage or disadvantage?

Pick Advantage or Disadvantage, add a d20 and press Roll. You can also type 2d20kh1 for advantage or 2d20kl1 for disadvantage.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Space or Enter rolls, A switches to advantage, D to disadvantage, N back to normal, and Escape clears the dice pool, the typed roll and the modifier.

Does the roller show a natural 20 or natural 1?

Yes. When a kept d20 lands on 20 or 1, the result is marked as a Natural 20 or Natural 1.

Can I save rolls and see my roll history?

Yes. The roller keeps your last 50 results and up to 20 saved rolls in your browser on this device. Press Clear history to wipe the log.

Can I share a roll with my group?

Yes. After a roll, press Copy share link. Anyone who opens the link gets the same notation, rolled fresh for them.

The d20 roller

What does the d20 roller do?

It rolls one d20, or two with advantage or disadvantage, adds your modifier and shows your chance to meet or beat any DC or AC you enter.

What is the average roll on a d20?

The average of one d20 is 10.5, which is (1 + 20) divided by 2.

How much does advantage help?

It depends on the number you need. If you need 11 or higher, a single d20 succeeds 50% of the time, advantage raises that to 75% and disadvantage drops it to 25%.

Rolling ability scores

Which stat rolling methods are included?

The stat roller offers 4d6 drop lowest, 3d6 straight, the standard array and point buy.

What is the standard array?

The standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8, assigned to the six abilities however you like.

How does point buy work here?

You get 27 points. Every score starts at 8 and can go up to 15 before bonuses. Scores up to 13 cost one point per step, while 14 costs 7 points in total and 15 costs 9.

What does 4d6 drop lowest average?

Across all 1,296 ways four d6 can land, 4d6 drop lowest averages about 12.24 per ability score.

How are ability modifiers worked out?

Subtract 10 from the score, divide by 2 and round down. A 15 gives +2 and an 8 gives -1.

Dice odds

How does the dice probability calculator work?

It builds the exact distribution of the total by combining each die in turn, so the odds are calculated, not estimated by simulation. It handles up to 30 dice of one size from d4 to d100, plus a modifier.

What does the calculator show?

The chance to roll a target total or higher, the chance to roll it exactly, the average total, a chart of every possible total and a table of d20 odds with and without advantage.

What is the most common total on 2d6?

Seven. It comes up in 6 of the 36 possible results, while 2 and 12 each come up in only 1 of 36.

Randomness and privacy

Are the rolls truly random?

Each roll uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Any value that would favor one face is thrown out and drawn again, so every face has the same chance.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts, and the tools do not ask for your name or email.

Where is my roll data stored?

Roll history and saved rolls stay in your own browser's local storage on the device you use. They are not sent to a server.

Is Nat20 Roller affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?

No. Nat20 Roller is an independent fan tool. Rules references draw on the System Reference Document 5.1, published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
